چکیده

UK transport policy has shifted dramatically in recent years. The new policy direction seeks to promote walking as an alternative to the car for short trips. Midblock signalled pedestrian crossings are a common method of resolving the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles. This paper considers alternative operating strategies for midblock signalled pedestrian crossings that are more responsive to the needs of pedestrians without adding to the costs of business by increasing delay to motorists and freight traffic. Specifically the paper considers the development of a pedestrian gap acceptance model that would be required in the proposed strategies. A succession of artificial neural network models are developed and factors influencing performance of the models both in terms of accuracy and processing requirements are considered in detail. The paper concludes that a feedforward artificial neural network using backpropagation can deliver a gap acceptance model with a high degree of accuracy within the context and constraints under which it has been developed.

pedestrians and to analyze pedestrian safety at crossings. The main objective of this paper is to present the development of a method to evaluate the potential risk of pedestrian crashes at midblock crossings, consistent with the realities of developing countries. The method comprises the identification of high-frequency crash locations that involve pedestrians, the selection of factors associa...

Pedestrian Gap Acceptance Logit Model in Unsignalized Crosswalks Conflict Zone

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. For evaluating and modifying pedestrian safety in unsignalized crosswalks, the first important issue is to identify and explore factors affecting the interaction behavior of pedestrians andvehicles in conflict areas. By analyzing those factors and determining how they affect road user's behavior, we canrepresent the plans and proc...

Pedestrian Route Planning based on an Enhanced Representation of Pedestrian Network and Probabilistic Estimate of Signal Delays

The paper proposes an enhanced representation of the pedestrian network that provides benefits for pedestrian route planning over a network representation that is used by a majority of existing route planning services. The pedestrian network is represented in the proposed methodology by pavements and crossings between them. Route planning is based on the travel time derived from distance and av...

Fundamental Building Blocks for Vehicle-Pedestrian Interaction in Emergency Evacuations

Evacuations requiring large numbers of pedestrians to evacuate and potentially interact with vehicles are unique in the complexity of interactions that must be understood and in the potentially catastrophic consequences of poor management. On the pedestrian side alone, these events, which may result from a variety of causes including terrorist attacks, bomb threats, and building fires, require ...

Modelling the Crossing Behavior of Pedestrian at Uncontrolled Intersection in Case of Mixed Traffic Using Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System

Critical gap is the most important parameter associated with gap acceptance study especially in case of delay and capacity estimation. Many studies are reported on gap acceptance behavior of pedestrian but most of them confined to developed country where traffic is homogeneous and traffic rules are strictly followed. Uncontrolled intersections in case of developed countries control the traffic ...
